digiLab are delighted to announce the launch of their new digiLab Academy, an online platform with a range of self-paced courses designed to help organisations upskill employees, with technical Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) skills.
digiLab’s long-term vision is to cater to learners from entry-level through to executive rank, with the overriding ethos that AI education should teach learners about “AI in the Wild” – that is, how AI/ML can be used on real-world problems with real-world data.
digiLab originated in the Innovate UK ICURe programme (Innovation-to-Commercialisation of University Research), powered by Innovate UK in 2020-21. During the company’s market validation journey on the programme, they discovered that organisations in the UK had huge amounts of warehoused data that wasn’t being used to create value or improve efficiency. In the words of CEO and Co-Founder Dr Anhad Sandhu, they set out “to solve Big Data for industry”.
Cutting-edge AI/ML Solutions
The data science and software engineering teams started developing cutting-edge AI/ML solutions, to tackle sustainability challenges such as nuclear fusion, air traffic control, and pollution management. digilab’s approach successfully led to contracts with the likes of UKAEA, NATS, and Jacobs.
digiLab then learned about the AI skills gap. This has been making it very difficult for UK organisations to tackle ML problems “in-house” and become AI-enabled. digiLab saw an opportunity and designed the digiLab Academy in response. By distilling the team’s extensive knowledge into accessible online courses, digiLab will enable many more people and organisations to use AI/ML on their own data challenges.
Professor Tim Dodwell, CTO and Co-Founder of digiLab and lead educator for the Academy, described his motivation and ambition for the Academy:
“On a really fundamental level – I just want more people to use AI and ML in their jobs! UK industry is struggling to unlock the full potential of AI/ML due to the skills shortage, but we believe the talent they need is already in-house – it just needs upskilling! Our online platform will help them do this in the most efficient way, with highly practical learning.”
Rayner Lim, Commercialisation Programmes Support Manager (Interim Lead- ICURe) with Innovate UK, said;
“I’m excited to see how the digiLab Academy will transform the landscape of AI and ML education. The whole of the UK stands to benefit from its upskilling training. AI/ML will be a gamechanger for industry in this country, and I’m convinced that the digiLab Academy will help UK businesses nurture the in-house talent they need for its deployment.”
In addition to the online library of AI/ML educational content, focusing on fundamental tools and techniques, digiLab offers a range of tailored services to clients to help augment their upskilling journey. This includes consultation around data challenges; customisation of learning pathways; development of industry-specific content; online drop-in clinics so that learners can engage with our AI/ML specialists; and assessment/certification, validating learner outcomes and enabling clients to monitor progress.
